Last week BIFM celebrated World FM Day, the annual celebration of facilities management around the globe, with a week of celebrations from 11 -15 July.
Celebrations ranged from conferences to webinars to networking and social events, to simply sharing FM success on social media.
Some of the key highlights from BIFM activities
The BIFM International SIG (ISIG) hosted three seminars in London and online, each tailored towards FMs in different regions of the world on the FM’s perspective on: Outsourcing across Borders, The EU Referendum Result and Empowerment and Productivity. At the first event of the day, ‘Outsourcing across Borders, The BIFM ISIG launched research findings from BIFM’s latest FM Leaders’ forum on the provision of facilities management services in international markets. This was the first FM leader’s forum discussion paper to be released by the BIFM International Special Interest Group. Download ‘Outsourcing across Borders’ discussion paper here.
BIFM celebrated the importance of learning and professional development at the inaugural Achievement Ceremony for people who have achieved a BIFM qualification in Facilities Management as well as hosting a webinar on how FM professionals can use the FM Career Development Pathway to progress and excel in their careers. The BIFM Scotland Region also demonstrated FM excellence and good practice by releasing a case study to support the World FM Day 2016 theme ‘empowering people for productive world’ by developing a client focused FM service for GP Practices creating a revenue stream for the NHS Grampian in Scotland. It was a big week for FM World. The title was relaunched on Monday 11 July with a fresh new look. As part of the festivities the team at FM World held a 15 Minutes of FM Fame live blog where Facilities Management professionals across the world were invited to share their typical day to represent the diversity and complexity of our profession. BIFM also celebrated the crucial role that volunteers play in advancing the FM profession by announcing the winners of their annual Volunteer Recognition Awards that can be seen here.
FM excellence was celebrated as the winners of the Global FM Awards of Excellence 2016 were announced with the Gold Award being won by BIFM’s submission – Heathrow Airport Limited, UK, featuring BIFM Awards FM of Year 2015, Alan Russel who collected the Award. Read more here.
The BIFM People Management Special Interest Group (PMSIG) hosted a breakfast workshop at the National Theatre about ‘getting your message across,’ described by guests as “one of the most enjoyable interactive and informative workshops I have attended” and “a great approach to breaking down barriers and getting to network.”
The BIFM Channel Islands Branch hosted a tour of the facilities on the tiny island of Herm just off Guernsey. The tour of the island explained FM how Simon George manages the island’s facilities at this popular tourist destination, and the recycling and energy management systems, used to manage sudden influxes of visitors.
The BIFM Sustainability Special Interest Group hosted an event ‘Clean, Green and Cherished’ at Orangebox, London, that celebrated all the fascinating opportunities for innovation and creativity in FM and the workplace using cost effective, energy saving solutions
The BIFM London Region hosted a summer party featuring canapes, cocktails, wine tasting, sushi, a live jazz band and motivational speaker Nigel Redman, the retired England International rugby union lock and now elite coach development manager at British Swimming.
Finally, BIFM partnered with the ACE Project solutions who hosted a World FM Day conference in Barbados, “Maintaining Asset Value across the Caribbean and Latin America.” Deborah Rowland, BIFM Facilities Manager of the Year 2013 and winner of the Global FM Platinum Award of Excellence in FM 2014 gave a key note speech on the importance of strategic FM; smart big data in the context of BIM and how FM is becoming the heart of the design and construction teams; and professionalising and putting FM at the forefront of career choices.
