3 employees fall ill in chemical mishap at business, officials say

Three employees of a Northampton County business were taken by ambulance to an area hospital after a chemical mishap Friday, authorities said.

Authorities in Hanover Township responded to an emergency medical services call for respiratory distress about 3 p.m. at Ungerer and Co. at 110 N. Commerce Way in the Lehigh Valley Industrial Park IV, township Manager Jay Finnigan said.

A chemical process within the facility had gone wrong, he said, and two more employees fell ill within an hour to an hour and a half.

All three employees were taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg in Bethlehem, the township manager said. One of the workers also suffered a bruise to the head from a fall, Finnigan said.

Northampton County Emergency Management Services and the Lehigh County Hazardous Materials Response Team responded, as the chemical process was brought back under control, Finnigan said.
